Easter Seals Central Texas Changes Lives

By Sarah Barnes

My daughter walked because of  Easter Seals Central Texas, which is a very simple way of describing one of the most important days of Meredith’s life.

When I learned Meredith had disabilities as an infant, one of the first calls I made was to the Easter Seals Central Texas or ESCT office. I was terrified that they could not help me, but after a few weeks I could already see progress and five long years later, Meredith walked with help from a ESCT therapist. It was the biggest thing to happen to Meredith and our entire family.

It’s alway s been my hope that all kids needing therapy could find it at Easter Seals, but sometimes money is needed to keep the therapy coming.

So, please read on. In a unique fundraiser Aug. 21 called The Next Chapter Book Club, Easter Seals Central Texas will celebrate New York Times bestselling author Ron Suskind with a luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel here in Austin.

According to Easter Seals Central Texas, “Mr. Suskind will discuss his latest book, “Life Animated, a Story of Sidekicks, Heroes and Autism” a truly inspirational story of how the Suskind family reconnected with their autistic son, Owen.  At age 3, Owen regressed into a non-communicative world, but through his affinity and deep connection to Disney movies, has since graduated from high school, college and is living in a semi independent living facility.”

“At Easter Seals Central Texas (ESCT), we encounter families like the Suskinds everyday.  They are searching for help, resources and support to meet the needs of children and adults with disabilities.  ESCT provides patient centered services such as outpatient physical, occupational, audiological and speech therapy, as well as paid job training, an independent living program, and the Next Chapter Book Club for people in 21 counties in Central Texas.”

“At weekly meetings, the Next Chapter Book Club gathers adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities to promote literacy and social interaction experiences that encourage friendship and lifelong learning within a community-based setting.”
